Our Rule of Seven (must-sees in Bath this December)

From screenings and storytelling to concerts and crafts, we've trawled through the very best of what's on in Bath this month. From festive favourite The Snowman to having actors performing heart-warming stories at your front door, read on for some great ways to get in to the Christmas Spirit this December:


1. Festive Doorstep Stories

Thursday 10 - Saturday 19 December, 4pm-8pm each evening

On your home's doorstep (literally!)


A wonderful opportunity to have one of twelve fun and festive stories by local writers performed by local actors ... right on your doorstep. It's like carol singing meets Deliveroo! Available for ten nights only to homes and households within a four-mile radius of Bath Abbey, book your very own Christmassy performance in advance. A limited number of telephone readings also available through the team's Telephone Tinsel Tales! Presented by Kilter Theatre and A Word in Your Ear.


2. David Baddiel - Future Friend

Saturday 12 December 2020, 11am-12noon

The Forum, Bath


Comedian and bestselling author David Baddiel’s brings his entertaining adventure stories for young readers to life by introducing his brand new blockbuster. Future Friend is a time-slip adventure that combines action, laugh-out-loud humour and the importance of friendship, in a story that asks the question – what would happen if your best friend came from the future?

3. Widcombe Christmas Market

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, 10.30am-5.00pm (Sat) and 10.30am-4pm (Sun)

Widcombe Christmas Market, formerly Widcombe Craft Fair, is now in its 14th year and has a growing reputation for quality gifts by local artists and artisans. A perfect place to find your special Christmas presents! Widcombe Social Club offers light and spacious surroundings over two floors with a lift, disabled facilities and refreshments. Organisers have implemented a number of measures to welcome visitors as safely as possible, from limiting numbers and one-way routes to requiring face-coverings and temperature checks on arrival. What better way to support the local creative community? Presented by Widcombe Association.


4. A Regency Christmas

Wednesday 15 December 2020, 7.30pm

Online and at BRLSI, Bath


A live and virtual lecture (followed by Q&A) from Regency era expert Prof Robert Morrison, British Academy Global Professor at Bath Spa University and author of 'The Regency revolution: Jane Austen, Napoleon, Lord Byron and the making of the modern world.' This lecture will consider Christmas in the early 19th Century, looking through lenses of poet John Keats, the politician Lord Castlereagh, the clergyman Sydney Smith, and the novelists Walter Scott and Jane Austen. Presented by Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution (BRLSI)


5. The Snowman and The Bear

Saturday 19 December 2020, 2:30pm and 5pm

The Forum, Bath


Bath's professional symphony orchestra, Bath Philharmonia, returns with its annual festive celebration - a magical double bill of Christmas film classics, ‘The Snowman’ and ‘The Bear’ on the big screen with live orchestra is the perfect Christmas treat for your family with Bath Philharmonia playing Howard Blake’s scores live to Raymond Briggs’ amazing animations. After a year like no other, revisit a Christmas family tradition and enjoy The Snowman at a Covid-secure and socially-distanced performance. 6. FilmBath Festival

Friday 11 - Wednesday 16 December, 6pm & 8.10pm each night (except Sunday)

Green Park Station, Bath


Covered outdoor space Green Park Station is set to be transformed in to the home of the FilmBath Festival 2020, rescheduled from its original November dates. Nine films screened over six nights will captivate socially-distanced audiences thanks to a specially-installed 26-foot screen, cinema quality projector and personal wireless sound transmitters (you just need to provide your own headphones - and don't forget your face-covering and warm clothes!). 7. The Play That Goes Wrong

17 December 2020 - 16 January 2021

Theatre Royal, Bath


Mischief Theatre’s multi award-winning international smash hit comedy The Play is returning to Theatre Royal Bath for some calamitous Christmas cheer! The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong… does! As the accident prone thesps battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue! Presented by Mischief Theatre.
